“Mums” The Word: Chrysanthemums Are October’s #FeaturedFlower

Are you looking for a flower that exudes the feeling of fall? Then, you can’t go wrong with the Chrysanthemum. These beautiful flowers come in all shades of your favorite fall colors; from deep oranges and reds to fiery bright yellows. And, they make a nice change from all that dreary brown of fallen leaves. Did you know that the Ancient Chinese revered Chrysanthemums as the flower of autumn? There is a type and category of artwork known as “The Four Gentlemen”, where Chinese painters portrayed four flowers (the gentlemen). The term originated from the Confucianist concept of the “junzi” and each plant is designated as a season. The elegant plum blossom is winter, the orchid for springtime, the bamboo is summer, and our Featured Flower, the chrysanthemum, is the official flower of autumn.

Along with their beautiful colors, Chrysanthemums (or, mums, for short) tend to be cold-season flowering plants. That’s fancy speak for you’ll be enjoying these beauties for the rest of the year! Especially because we’re located in a milder winter climate area. Did we mention that the blooms in the fall last for weeks, not just a few days? These plants are the ultimate cold weather flower and are incredibly hardy.

Not only are mums beautiful, they’re also very versatile. They look great as a fall foliage in the ground or as a container plant on your front porch. For your commercial properties, talk with your landscaping expert about exhibition varieties of mums. These varieties can be used to create many amazing plant forms, such as large disbudded blooms, spray forms, and many artistically trained forms, such as thousand-bloom, standard (trees), fans, hanging baskets, topiary, bonsai, and cascades. Spreading fall chrysanthemums around your home, especially in your front yard or scattered around your backyard will make your home seasonally decorated and freshly fragrant, as well!
