Is your landscape turning into a desert, suffering from a lack of shade? Well, why not consider planting a Jolly Green Giant, in your backyard. Before you say anything, we know how that sounds. But, Great Estates thinks the best type of shade comes from tall, tall trees. Consider, one of our favorites; the Western Red Cedar! The Western red cedar is a magnificent tree known for its fragrant leaves (which some say is reminiscent of a pineapple), decay-resistant wood and soft, scaled leaves. Thuja Plicata, as the scientists say, is one of the largest and hardiest cedars and can grow for up to a millennia!
Western red cedar can thrive in most any climate, but they do better in mild or moderate planting zones. Luckily for us, Georgia is one of the best places for this gargantuan beauty! In these mild climates, you can plant it almost year-round, although certain times are ideal. We actually recommend planting in cooler weather, which causes less shock to your young saplings. A fairly low-maintenance tree, western red cedar requires minimal care once established, but a little babying immediately after planting will ensure healthy growth no matter when you plant it. You’ll need to water your new addition at least once a week, to avoid the risk of drought stress.
So, are you ready to plant these gorgeous green giants in your backyard? Well, hold on just a little bit. The Western red cedar is a pretty addition, but installing these trees can come with certain challenges. For instance, in order to properly install a red cedar, you’ll need to use a tree spade. This is a huge piece of equipment that can only be used with a tractor. Don’t spend all your time, money, and energy putting these plants in their place! Call the expert team at Great Estates Landscaping. We will insure your cedars have the proper space to grow tall and provide shade for your property for centuries. Plus, you don’t have to worry about hauling in the heavy equipment. We can take care of it all!
